How we measured: Each home page was loaded in Chromium emulating a phone on a throttled connection (1.6 Mbps down, 150 ms round trip, CPU four times slower), the same profile Lighthouse uses for its mobile test. These are lab figures. Real visitors on real networks will see different numbers, in the same proportion. Measured 10 September 2026.
The story.
The original site for this Perth mortgage broker carried a lot of weight it did not need. A single page pulled in 116 requests, 38 of them from third parties, and 2.6 MB of data. On a throttled phone the main content took 14.7 seconds to appear and the page kept loading for a full 16 seconds. Elements moved around while that was happening, with a layout shift score of 0.14.
We rebuilt the site with the same content and a much simpler structure. The page now makes 9 requests, only 4 of them to third parties, and weighs 226 KB. We cut the number of page elements from 853 to 521, so there is less for a phone to work through before anything shows up.
On the same throttled phone test, run the same day, largest contentful paint dropped from 14.7 seconds to 1.7 seconds, which is 8.6 times faster. First contentful paint went from 2.3 seconds to 1.0 second. The page is fully loaded in 1.7 seconds instead of 16.0 seconds. Layout shift now measures 0.00.
For someone comparing brokers on their phone between other jobs, that is the difference between a blank screen and a page they can read straight away. Nothing jumps as they scroll, so the phone number and the details they came for stay where they first saw them.
