Tracking and pixels
Add your Google Tag Manager container or Google Analytics id to your Marketli-built website, and give your ad agency the two event names they need.
Your Marketli-built website can report to Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, a heat-mapping tool, or anything else your marketer uses. You set it up once, in Marketli, and nothing on your website has to change again.
You will find it in the Editor, on the Tracking button at the top of the screen. Only company owners and admins can change it.
The short version
Paste your Google Tag Manager container id into the Tracking panel and press Save. Everything else your marketer wants to add lives inside that container, where they can add and remove tags themselves without ever asking us.
If you have no marketer and just want Google Analytics, paste your Google Analytics measurement id instead and leave the container box empty.
What Google Tag Manager is
Google Tag Manager is a free container that holds all your marketing tags in one place. Instead of adding a Meta pixel to your website, then a Google Ads tag, then a LinkedIn tag, you add the container once and manage everything inside it.
That matters here because it means your website never has to be edited to add a tag. Your agency signs in to Tag Manager, adds what they need, and it is live on your site on the next page load.
A container id looks like GTM-ABC1234. You will find it on the Tag Manager home screen, next to your container name.
What the Google Analytics id is
If you only want Google Analytics and nobody is running ads for you, you can skip Tag Manager entirely and paste your Google Analytics measurement id instead. It looks like G-ABCD123456, and you will find it in Google Analytics under Admin, then Data streams, then your website.
If you fill in both boxes, only the container is loaded. That is on purpose: when you have a container, Analytics is set up inside it, and loading both would count every visitor twice.
Tags only run on your live domain
Your tags fire on your live domain and nowhere else. The preview address Marketli builds your site on, and any staging copy of it, load nothing at all.
That is deliberate. It means our own testing, and any work being done on your site, never shows up as traffic or as conversions in your reports, and never spends a cent of your ad budget.
If your domain is not live yet, you can still save your ids now. They start working the moment your domain goes live. See Connect your own domain.
Two events your agency will ask for
Your website tells your container when a visitor completes something, using two names:
site_leadwhen someone submits an enquiry formsite_bookingwhen someone books a time
Hand those two names to whoever runs your ads. In Tag Manager they set up a trigger on each one, and point it at whichever conversions they are tracking (Google Ads, Meta, and so on). Nothing on your website needs to change for that to work.
Changing or removing an id
Come back to the Tracking panel, edit the box and press Save. To stop tracking altogether, clear the box and save. Your website picks the change up on the next page load, and there is nothing to publish.
Changes can take up to five minutes to reach every visitor, because the setting is cached to keep your site fast.
What this does not cover
- Cookie consent banners. If you need one, that is a separate piece of work; ask your Marketli contact.
- Pasting a snippet from a vendor we have not listed. Add it inside your Tag Manager container instead, which is exactly what containers are for.
- Setting up the tags themselves. Marketli loads your container; what goes inside it is yours or your agency's to configure.
